Therefore you should report issues to the packagers first, before reporting to the GIMP team. We only list some of these package systems here because they are widely used FLOSS projects, though we won't list projects providing very outdated versions. The installer allows you to choose from a large directory of packages. To install gimp using Macports, you simply do sudo port install gimp once you have Macports installed.

As GIMP is open-source, numerous enthusiasts have made derivative software based on the original program. These include CinePaint, which is used for retouching film; GimPhoto, which bases its interface around Photoshop; and GIMP Portable, which is designed to work as a portable application.
The most immediately obvious difference is that the two programs have quite distinct interfaces, and anybody used to one will take time to get used to the other. Beyond this, the two share many of the same features, including the more specialised tools. Professional users should lean towards Photoshop, the industry standard, but the free GIMP is perfect for anybody on a budget. GIMP is a raster editor and does not handle vectors; anybody planning to create vector art should try a specialised program such as Illustrator.
It is also unable to handle 3D images; this is an area where Photoshop, which holds limited 3D capabilities, has an edge. GIMP is updated irregularly, and often goes for multiple years without an update. As noted above, however, the program is open-source and so some users have created updates and derivative programs of their own.

Fink is a package repository that offer mostly precompiled binaries. It provides the apt-get command known to e. Debian and Ubuntu users, and installing GIMP is as easy as sudo apt-get install gimp once you have installed the Fink installer. If there's no binary package, then fink install gimp will compile GIMP from source. Disclaimer: we haven't been able to determine if it is possible to install or build recent GIMP from Fink.
Last we checked, GIMP 2. The installer contains both bit and bit versions of GIMP, and will automatically use the appropriate one. BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing system. It works by downloading GIMP from a distributed network of BitTorrent users, and may improve download speed dramatically. GIMP is a free, open-source photo editing software that rivals more expensive programs like Adobe Photoshop. It has the professional tools to go up against any digital editing programs and plenty of tutorials and user-guides to help you get started.
With GIMP, you can retouch images or use the tools to design images, logos, newsletters, brochures, and more. It uses a similar layer-based design made popular by Photoshop, which makes it easy to edit different components, go back to through the editing history to make changes, add masks, gradients, and move elements around without affecting the rest of your image. In addition to the built-in tools, GIMP is compatible with more than plug-ins that will extend the software functionality.
Overall, GIMP is one of the best photo editing software programs available compared to both subscription-based and free software. I was very impressed with the variety of tools that are readily available with GIMP. Several helpful plug-ins come installed in the software and there are others that I was able to download for free and easily upload to the software.
