Twisted Metal Black is a car combat game on a scale never before seen. You've got fourteen different vehicles, a host of levels, and numerous insane weapons with which to pound the competition, all while racing around heavily detailed maps that offer many different secrets for the inquisitive player.
The cars are all heavily maneuverable and armed to the teeth, promising for hours of explosive fun. For those of you who played the original Twisted Metal games, you'll find that the controls are just the way you left them. If you've become accustomed to the Analog buttons on the Dual Shock 2, you'll find that they now control acceleration and steering, and can be used for fine control or wild stunts.
Very unrealistic, and at its most basic a car combat game, each car is very maneuverable and packed with weaponry that will let you lay your enemy low. Controlling your car's movement can be accomplished with the analog sticks or the directional pad and, depending on your preference, you may need to experiment with both. You've got a machine gun with unlimited ammo, which occasionally overheats if you use it too much, but the special weapons are where the game excels.
You can pick up missiles, rockets, satellite attacks, and you can even hurl gas cans at your enemy. In the middle of a firefight, the fast action redeems the chunky visuals. The graphics aren't bad--certainly acceptable for a PlayStation game--and they're better than those found in TMlYou get the sense that they would have been better if the hardware had allowed it Clearly, speed was the programming goal, and the goal was achieved.
On the soundtrack side, Rob Zombie and Pitchshifter grind all the way through the game, while machine guns and explosions sound accurate and bold. The default controls are wisely the same as Twisted Metal 2's, but players can create a custom setup easily.
Using the analog sticks is fun, but doesn't let you perform combos like jumps or rear attacks with ease, and you'll have to reconfigure to fully utilize them. Still, it's nice to have Dual Shock support on such an infamously explosion-riddled game. Twisted Metal III avoids a lot of mistakes by putting gameplay over flash and is a worthy chapter in the series.
The high frame rate makes things move along nicely, but the textures tend to draw in late; the game's low-res pixelated look might turn some drivers away. Generally, you'll be moving too fast to care. No surprise here for Twisted Metal veterans--cars respond perfectly, and the controls are yours to reconfigure to match your tastes. Analog control and Dual Shock offer more options.
It's just a shame the combo attacks are so tricky to pull off. Two words: Rob Zombie! Dirty industrial-strength liffs from rock's resident creepy character as well as tracks by Brit sensation Pitchshifter ensure you'll keep driving angry.
Plenty of squealing tires and thundering explosions round out the package. Twisted Metal III proves itself with a solid physics foundation, excellent level design, and bumper-to-bumper excitement. Besides the regular weapons, players can perform controller "combos" to activate other special moves like freeze attacks and energy shields.
These are done by Up,. Up, Down, Down moves or other Street Fighter-type moves. By figuring these out, gamers will last longer in a level or prolong the agony of their opponents as they freeze them then wait for them to thaw before they load a few missiles up their exhaust. Another special move enables a gamer to jump from a stationary or moving position.
This way, hidden areas are no longer unreachable. Keep an eye open for backgrounds that are destructible. By blowing up a wall here or a monument there, power-ups become reachable. For instance, in Paris, by planting a bomb under the Eiffel Tower-when it blows up the Tower falls over-and creates a road leading to a power-up or two.
There are also teleporters in areas that lead to power-ups. Keep an eye out for these scattered throughout the levels. This time the characters have more personality and more of a background.
